5 Tips to Pass 552 the First Time

From Erike Young — who has helped hundreds of candidates through this exact exam.

1
The CGL structure is the foundation for the entire course
Three coverage parts — bodily injury and property damage, personal and advertising injury, medical payments. Know each part cold: what triggers coverage, what the limits structure looks like, and what's excluded.
2
Occurrence vs. claims-made triggers appear on every exam
The difference between an occurrence policy (loss during the policy period) and a claims-made policy (claim reported during the policy period) is fundamental to CPCU 552 and appears constantly. Practice applying each trigger to scenarios.
3
CGL exclusions have reasons — learn the rationale
Each CGL exclusion exists because the exposure is addressed elsewhere, is uninsurable, or creates a moral hazard. When you know why an exclusion exists, questions about whether coverage applies become much easier to reason through.
4
Umbrella gap questions require synthesis from multiple courses
Umbrella coverage questions often require knowing what the primary policy covers, where the gap is, and whether the umbrella drops down. This requires integrating knowledge from AIC 300, CPCU 530, and CPCU 551 simultaneously.
5
Professional liability is growing as an exam topic
E&O, D&O, EPLI, and cyber liability questions have become more common as the specialty lines market has grown. Don't treat these as minor topics — know the coverage trigger and primary exclusion for each line.

I built this program because cost and schedule shouldn't be the reason you don't earn your designation. Every lesson uses real-world examples because understanding why the material works the way it does is what makes it stick on the exam. When a concept isn't clicking, you can call or text me directly — that's not a marketing phrase, it's how I actually teach.

552 FAQs

Is CPCU 552 harder than CPCU 551?
Most candidates find 552 harder because it requires synthesis — integrating legal concepts, claims knowledge, and coverage analysis from multiple previous courses. It's not that the individual concepts are harder, it's that the exam tests them together.
What is the most important concept to master in CPCU 552?
The CGL coverage trigger — occurrence vs. claims-made — and the three coverage parts of the CGL form. If you understand how the CGL is structured and what triggers coverage, you can reason through most CPCU 552 scenarios even when the specific fact pattern is unfamiliar.
After CPCU 552, what comes next?
After completing AIC 300, CPCU 530, 540, 551, and 552, you have completed the CPCU Commercial Lines core courses. You'll then need to complete The Institutes' ethics requirement and CPCU capstone to receive your designation. Visit theinstitutes.org for current requirements.
